What we've been doing recently

Sky, what's on

Sky have established themselves as a leading brand in subscription service TV with some great subscription channels along with free-to-air channels and a whole host of sports and specialist channels. Sky continue to innovate how TV can be watched around your home.

Sky Q.

Sky Q is a brilliant system, a single twin cable connection to one box and further mini boxes connecting through this main box. Although Sky insist on their own installers fitting Sky Q systems and dishes for new customers such an installation can sometimes fall short of expectations or leave a little to be desired. In some cases Sky installers have refused to install a dish in the customer's desired position or to utilise pre-installed cables and sockets in a new build property as their rules of installation prevent them from accessing loft spaces or ascending onto flat roofs. Often a Sky installer will "throw" the installation up as quickly as possible so as to move on to his next job sooner rather than later with little or no regard for the aesthetics and visual impact of the installation. If you are considering having Sky installed but are concerned about seeing a dish "slapped" on your wall we can advise or even rectify to lessen the impact of the installation. In some cases a dish can be discreetly installed to the back of a chimney stack or peaking over a roof rather than at the first convenient position or where it requires the least amount of work.

If you already have Sky and are fed up of seeing "No satellite signal is being received" on your Sky Q, Sky plus or Sky plus HD system or programs are only part recording or failing completely, we can give your Sky equipment a "health check" checking the receiver, satellite dish and dish alignment, LNB and cabling for less than standard Sky call out fee. And of course advise on the best course of action to resume your viewing enjoyment without interruption. Get in touch with us here to discuss improving your reception or the overall look of your installation.

Want to watch more than one Sky channel at once in different rooms? If you can never agree on what to watch and would like the option of having the sports on in one room and the big movie in another then let us advise you on having a multi room system installed. Most Sky dishes for Sky plus have enough connections to run 2 Sky plus HD boxes. With the required additional cabling and equipment and one or more additional viewing cards from Sky you could be enjoying your package to the full rather than squabbling over the remote.

Or you might have Sky Q multiroom using Sky Q mini boxes wirelessly but performance is unreliable due to poor wifi performance. A solid network connection via ethernet cabling could be the solution you are looking for, perhaps even combined with a wireless access point. To discuss your issues get in touch with us here to discuss extending your system and improving your enjoyment around your home.

Sky Glass.

You may have encountered the current crop of Sky Glass advertisements on TV and Radio and wondered what is this all about. Well, Sky have joined in with the streaming TV revolution by manufacturing their own brand of TV with "Sky built in". What this means is a TV that is wholly reliant on broadband to deliver the Sky services you may know and love. No dish connection, no set-top box, what's not to love. On paper it all sounds great, but in reality there's a lot to consider and even more scope to be be disappointed. Below are some points to consider before rushing to jump on the bandwagon.

1. Firstly, is the initial outlay for a new TV, which the cost can be spread over a number of years with essentially a hire purchase option from Sky. But this will inevitably tie you in to a contract for not just a year but several years to service the debt.

2. Reliability. We've all been the victim of broadband outages and general lag and buffering of internet delivered services. Although this is improving over time with improved fibre connectivity, in home wifi connections are still far from perfect in almost every household. Completely relying upon broadband for TV delivery is a very bold move and something that most will see unsatisfactory results regularly and complete loss of TV reception at times.

3. No ability to record. Sky Glass has no capability to record TV programs or channels locally. The thinking is, as everything is streamed there is no need to record anything. However, live sporting events are often not available to be streamed until several hours after their completion, if they are availabe at all to be streamed after the event. And in addition, no more ability to fast forward those advert breaks. Does this sound and look like progress?

4. If Sky Glass goes wrong, your entire TV is useless. Or if you no longer want to subscribe to Sky, you are left with a TV that serves practially no purpose at all. Sky really do seem to be trying to hook and net customers with this service.

Sky Stream.

If you fancy the idea of Sky Glass but don't want a Sky Glass TV there is now the option of subscribing to Sky Stream. Sky Stream is basically Sky Glass in a small set top box. Connecting to your existing TV by HDMI it is a quick and simple way of receiving Sky TV. But it also falls fowl of the same disadvantages as Sky Glass, potential poor perforamce due to internet connection speed, poor wifi performance, no true ability to record and play back what you want when you want and whizz past those ads. Not unless you pay Sky an extra £5 per month again to skip ads. Although with Sky Stream you can sign up on short term contract basis when you don't subscribe none of the services are available, not even the free services such as Freeview, BBCiplayer and ITVX. Don't be tricked into paying for something you can get for free elsewhere!
